Mineral Sunscreen White Cast: Why It Happens, and How to Make It Disappear

I want to tell you about the first time I put our sunscreen, salt+blue, on my own skin.
I had the test bottle here and had been using it sparingly for a few weeks, and then one day I used a lot! Not sure why I all of a sudden decided to lather almost the entire bottle on my skin. But I did.
I was outside, smoothing it all over my arms and chest, when I had that immediate thought: Oh my goodness… is this going to leave a white cast? Because in that moment, it definitely looked like it would.
I went inside to fill up my water and came back out maybe two minutes later. And it was gone. Completely vanished into this sheer, soft finish that looked like my skin again.
I was so relieved.
I think about that moment a lot, because it's the exact moment most people are going to have with this formula. And I'd rather tell you about it now than have you standing in your kitchen (or at the beach) wondering if something went wrong.

Why does mineral sunscreen leave a white cast?
White cast is what happens when zinc oxide — the mineral doing the actual sun protection — is still sitting in a thick, uneven layer instead of spread thin across your skin. Zinc is white. The zinc we use is around 200 nm — large enough to scatter visible light efficiently, since scattering peaks when a particle is roughly half the wavelength of the light hitting it. That's why non-nano zinc reads white and nano zinc reads closer to clear.4 Work it in, and the scattering drops away. The protection doesn't.
Zinc oxide absorbs UV. It's a semiconductor, which means UV photons hit it, get taken up, and dissipate as a trace of heat instead of reaching your skin cells. When researchers actually measured it, metal oxide sunscreens turned out to reflect or scatter only about 4–5% of the UV hitting them and absorb essentially all the rest — the opposite of the “tiny mirrors” story most of us grew up on.1
And it does all of that from the surface. When researchers applied zinc oxide to volunteers' skin every hour for six hours, and again daily for five days, then imaged the skin directly, the particles stayed in the outermost layer — the stratum corneum — and in the furrows of the skin. They didn't reach the living cells underneath.2 That study used nanoparticles, which are smaller than what we use.
Does a white cast mean the sunscreen is working?
Yes — what you're looking at is the filter itself, before it's been spread thin. The white you see in the first thirty seconds isn't a flaw. It's the protection, mid-application.
That's the part that took me a minute to get comfortable with. Every other product I would see friends use or see online would disappear on contact, so I read “still visible” as “not working yet.” It's the reverse. The zinc is already doing its job the moment it's on you. Rubbing it in is about how it looks, not about whether you're covered.
What about chemical sunscreens — don't those rub in clear?
They do.
We didn't go that route because we've seen the data on their safety — even the FDA covered this in 2019. It reviewed the sixteen UV filters on the US market and proposed two as generally recognized as safe and effective: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The other twelve — oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, avobenzone — went into a category called insufficient data.3
Insufficient data isn't a finding of harm. It means the testing hasn't been done.
Zinc is one of the two. It doesn't break down in sunlight, doesn't need a second chemical to stay stable, and stays in the outermost layer of your skin.
So: a little white cast as I'm rubbing it sheer is a trade I'll make every single time.

Why does this sunscreen feel different from a regular lotion?
Because there's no water in it. Our sunscreen is anhydrous — that means no water at all.
Most sunscreens have a lot of water. Water is what makes a formula thin and slippery and fast — it's what lets a lotion disappear the second it hits your skin.
But water also comes with setbacks. The moment you put water in a bottle, the formula becomes much more vulnerable to bacteria, mold, and yeast, so you need a preservative system to keep it safe. You need stabilizers to keep it from separating on a shelf, and solubilizers to get everything mixed and dissolved.
I didn't want any of that. So I worked backward from there.
Instead, the base of this formula is nourishing plant oils and butters, carrying the non-nano zinc oxide. Sunflower seed oil, apricot kernel oil, avocado oil, olive oil, red raspberry seed oil, sea buckthorn fruit oil, vitamin E, MCT coconut oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, and beeswax to give it body. Nearly all of them are organically grown or wildcrafted.
Read that list again and notice what it is — that's the kind of ingredient list you'd expect to see from a rich body butter or oil. Every single one of those ingredients would be worth putting on your skin even without the zinc oxide.
And because there's no water, there's no preservative system. Nothing to solubilize. The formula is stable because there's simply nothing in it that needs stabilizing.
That's the tradeoff: we chose a shorter, cleaner ingredient list, knowing the texture would feel different than a conventional sunscreen.
How long should mineral sunscreen take to rub in?
Ten to twenty seconds. That's it, that's the whole learning curve.
Expect something closer to a body butter than a lotion. It's creamy and rich, and has substance. It does not dissolve into your skin the instant it makes contact, and it isn't supposed to. You warm it between your fingers, you press it in, and you rub for a good ten to twenty seconds.

Warm a small amount between your fingers, press it onto the skin, and rub in small circles for ten to twenty seconds until the white disappears.
And if you've got hair on your arms — give it about two minutes, then go back and rub again. It goes right in.
But I want to name something, because it's the real reason people get thrown: we have a mindset of instantaneity. We expect products to perform immediately, invisibly, without asking anything of us. And that's just not this. This asks you for twenty seconds and a little bit of intention.
And honestly, my hope is that people come to love that part. Putting on sunscreen is often something people rush through on their way out the door. Now it can be a small ritual — warm creamy goodness, hands on your own skin, a minute or two of paying attention to yourself before you go out into the day. It takes slightly longer, but it's worth it.

Does moisturizing first help?
Yes, and more than you'd think. Hydrated, moisturized skin takes this formula so much better than dry, thirsty skin does.
Here's something I learned by accident. One morning, I put body oil on before I left the house, nothing fancy, just my usual. I drove to the river and applied some sunscreen once I got there. And it rubbed in completely differently. It glided, sheered out in half the time it usually takes me.
Dry skin grabs at the product and holds it in place, which is exactly when white cast lingers. Skin that's already soft and supple lets it spread and blend.
So if you're finding it takes a while to disappear, that's usually your answer: your skin is thirsty. Moisturize first, then apply.
This is a great tip if you have a medium or darker complexion, since you may experience a white cast more than someone with super fair skin. It's also a good reminder for all of us to simply care for our skin before we ask anything of it.
Why is white cast more visible on medium and deeper skin tones?
Because it's a contrast problem. The zinc is the same white on everyone — it just reads more obviously against deeper skin, so the same amount of product that disappears on fair skin can stay visible longer on medium and deep tones.
The fixes are the same ones, they just matter more: moisturize first, use slightly less product per pass and build up, and give it the full twenty seconds instead of ten. A damp-skin application helps too — right after a shower, before you're fully dry.
Is it worth the extra minute?
If you're a purist — if you want something clean, simple, safe, and still genuinely effective — then I think you'll be okay giving it an extra minute.
We could have made the formula thinner and quicker to blend, but doing so would have meant adding water — and then adding the additional ingredients needed to support a water-based formula.
But we weren't willing to do that.
Every ingredient in this bottle is there because it's doing something for your skin or protecting you from the sun. Nothing is in there to manage the consequences of something else being in there.
That's the whole philosophy, really. Fewer ingredients, more intention. A little patience on your end, and a formula you never have to second-guess.
Apply it. Take your twenty seconds. Watch it vanish.
